Hicks Johnson Hires New Leader of its Appellate Practice

August 25, 2025 Alexa Shrake

Houston appellate attorney Andrew Gould has joined Hicks Johnson to lead the firm’s appellate practice.

“I’m thrilled to join Hicks Johnson and to help build on its top-tier reputation for excellence in complex litigation,” Gould said in a news release. “Having spent the past few years representing clients on one side of the ‘v.’ I look forward to bringing that experience to both sides of the docket. Hicks Johnson offers the rare opportunity to combine elite trial and appellate advocacy under one roof. I can’t wait to get started.”

Today is his first day with the firm and he was not available for interviews. He previously spent four years with Arnold & Itkin, where he founded and led the firm’s appellate practice. Prior to that role, Gould served as a federal appellate prosecutor in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Texas and practiced complex commercial litigation at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher in Washington, D.C.

“We couldn’t be happier to welcome Andrew to the firm,” Hicks Johnson managing partner Andy Hicks said in the release. “Our appellate practice has always been known for its excellence handling complex appeals nationwide. Andrew’s leadership will strengthen the practice, reinforcing it as the go-to team for appellate matters in Texas and beyond. His addition will ensure our clients continue to receive best-in-class counsel and advocacy and will support the advancement of our growth strategy.”

Gould is the publisher of 1910 & Beyond, a Substack that explores the evolving landscape of appellate litigation in Houston and beyond. This resource will now be co-published by Gould and the firm to provide timely analysis of the appellate cases shaping legal and business strategy for Hicks Johnson’s clients.

“Andrew is a highly accomplished appellate practitioner with boundless enthusiasm for the work we do, as evidenced by both his record of success for clients, his Substack, and his involvement in the Federal Bar Association,” Hicks Johnson partner Marc Tabolsky said in the release. “We are pleased to leverage Andrew’s skills and experience to benefit our clients.”

Gould posted on his LinkedIn that he would be “hitting the ground running, with an appellate argument, several appellate briefs, and multiple CLE presentations already on the docket this month.”

He is a graduate of the University of Michigan and earned his law degree from Vanderbilt University Law School. He began his legal career as a judicial law clerk to Judge Raymond M. Kethledge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit and Judge Lee H. Rosenthal of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas.
