Krista Torralva

Krista Torralva covers pro bono, public service, and diversity for the Texas Lawbook Foundation and The Texas Lawbook. Previously, she covered courts for The Dallas Morning News. Krista has spent the bulk of her decade-plus-long career covering criminal courts in Texas and Florida. Her reporting includes the high profile federal terrorism trial against the Pulse nightclub shooter’s widow in Orlando, which ended in a rare acquittal. Her civil courts coverage has included the long-winding Texas voter ID lawsuit, legal battles over local Covid-19 mandates and school board disputes. Krista's work has been recognized by the State Bar of Texas' Gavel Awards, the Texas Association Press Managing Editors, the National Headliner Awards program and various local chapters of the Society of Professional Journalists.

The daughter of a Naval officer, Krista grew up traveling every few years but calls Corpus Christi home and talks about the Texas Gulf Coast every chance she gets. She lives in Dallas’ North Oak Cliff with her husband, Fares Sabawi.

Krista graduated from the University of Texas at Arlington.

Truelove: The Last Name Attached to Some of Marshall’s Biggest Verdicts

From the $663 million False Claims Act judgment against Trinity Industries in 2014 to this year's $1.4 billion settlement on behalf of the state of Texas against Facebook parent Meta, one name stands out: Truelove. Jennifer and Kurt Truelove have been involved in some of the biggest verdicts and settlements to come out of Marshall, the East Texas town famous for its patent litigation docket.

As Jury Selection Begins, $30M Settlement Reached in Hunt Oil Crash Suit

Plaintiff lawyers Brent Goudarzi and Charla Aldous said the settlement was reached as jury selection began in a Dallas County district court. Their client, a Texas mother of three, was left with a permanent back injury as a result of the 2019 wreck.

Michael Galdo enters the private sector after more than 15 years as a federal prosecutor. He recently served as the Department of Justice’s Director of COVID-19 Fraud Enforcement in the Office of the Deputy Attorney General and was an assistant U.S. attorney in charge of cybercrime in the Western District of Texas.

Pillsbury Hires Away Energy and Construction Litigator from Locke Lord 

Derrick Carson, who previously chaired Locke Lord’s energy litigation practice and construction law practice groups, has represented clients in complex energy and construction disputes for more than 25 years. Pillsbury announced Monday that Carson joined the firm as a partner in its Houston office.

Judge Vacates $260M Verdict Against Johnson & Johnson; Plaintiff’s Dallas-Based Lawyers Plan to Appeal

The state judge in Oregon did not immediately offer a reason for overturning a jury’s verdict in the trial for a woman who accused J&J’s talc-based baby powder of causing her mesothelioma. J&J’s worldwide vice president of litigation blasted Dean Omar Branham Shirley lawyers for “prejudicial conduct” that led to an “indefensible” verdict.

Houston-Based Law Firm Obtains $39M Verdict in Mesothelioma Case Against Georgia Mineral Company

The Lanier Law Firm represented a mesothelioma patient who lawyers said is the first person to claim that the medical procedure talc pleurodesis led to his deadly cancer. Cimbar Performance Minerals failed to warn its buyers of the risk of asbestos in its products, which was contained in a product used in the plaintiff’s medical procedure, lawyers said.

Samsung Hit With $192M Patent Infringement Verdict

A federal jury in Marshall found Samsung infringed on five patents obtained by California-based startup Mojo Mobility with the tech giant’s flagship smartphone Galaxy series and other products. Jurors awarded Mojo Mobility more than $192 million in damages and found that Samsung willfully infringed on at least one of the asserted claims.

Jury Begins Deliberations in Patent Infringement Case Against Samsung

A federal jury in Marshall began deliberating Thursday whether South Korean technology company Samsung Electronics infringed on cell phone wireless-charging patents obtained by California-based startup Mojo Mobility. McKool Smith lawyers asked for $303.5 million for its client. A legal team led by Paul Hastings denied Samsung infringed and asserted the patents at issue were invalid.

Trial Underway in Patent Infringement Case Against Samsung Electronics

California-based startup company Mojo Mobility says Samsung Electronics flagship devices infringe on five of its wireless charging patents. McKool Smith lawyers representing Mojo and Samsung’s legal team led by Paul Hastings are in trial this week in Marshall.
