Premium Subscriber Q&A: Brennan Champion

January 24, 2025 Jason Philyaw

In this Q&A with The Texas Lawbook, Brennan Champion, the assistant general counsel for ECI Software Solutions Inc., discusses the traits he seeks in outside counsel, what outside counsel need to know when working with him and more.

Texas Lawbook: What do you look for in hiring outside counsel?

Brennan Champion: I look for prompt responses, attention to detail, and the ability to work with ECI’s business leaders (i.e., communicating complex legal concepts to business leaders without confusing legalese). Greenburg always exceeds these expectations.

Lawbook: What does outside counsel need to know about working with you?

Champion: ECI puts a lot of trust in its outside counsel, which is why ECI regularly uses Greenberg. We can count on GT to provide high-quality work products and manage complex issues. The most important thing to me is active involvement and regular updates in a summarized form.

Lawbook: What is the role of GCs and in-house counsel in seeking solutions to improve diversity and inclusion?

Champion: GCs and in-house counsel play a crucial role in crafting and enforcing policies that promote diversity and inclusion within the organization. By ensuring that these policies are not only compliant with legal standards but also actively promote inclusion at all levels, legal teams can help create a more welcoming and diverse workplace.
