The Woodlands-based discount furniture and appliance retailer Conn Appliances filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Tuesday in the Southern District of Texas citing more than $1 billion in debts.
The case was assigned to new Houston Bankruptcy Judge Alfredo Perez, who was sworn in last week as the newest judge in the Southern District of Texas hearing large, complex business restructurings.
Conn General Counsel Mark A. Prior chose Sidley Austin partner Duston McFaul of Houston as the company’s lead outside legal advisor for the bankruptcy.
In its bankruptcy petition, Conn’s states it owes at least 25,000 creditors, including companies such as Google, more than $1 billion, while also citing more than $1 billion in assets.
