White & Case Adds Energy M&A Dealmaker in Houston

October 8, 2025 Jeff Schnick

White & Case bolstered its M&A and energy group by hiring veteran Houston dealmaker Ian Goldberg, the firm announced in a news release.

Bringing considerable experience with complex energy transactions, Goldberg also advises on energy transition, from carbon capture to renewable projects.

“White & Case is at the forefront of advising on complex deals in the energy industry,” said Jay Cuclis, White & Case’s Houston office executive partner and co-head of its global energy industry group, in the release. “As our clients continue to invest in large-scale projects, Ian’s experience will be a vital asset to the continued build-out of our Houston presence in response to sustained client demand.”

Goldberg was with Akin for nearly two years before joining White & Case.

At Akin, two notable deals that he led or co-led this year included the Canadian Pension Plan Investment Board’s sale of its 98 percent stake in Encino Acquisition Partners in May to Houston-based EOG Resources for $5.6 billion. The other was a Houston-based U.S. subsidiary of Japan’s Shizuoka Gas Group’s $130 million purchase of a shale gas development project from TG Eagle Ford Resources.

Prior to that, Goldberg spent more than five years with Hunton Andrews Kurth.

“We’re prioritizing continued growth in our leading energy sector and M&A capabilities,” said White & Case chair Heather McDevitt in the release. “Ian brings strong upstream and midstream dealmaking expertise to our Houston team that will complement our offering in these areas.”

According to the Lawbook 50, White & Case increased its Texas revenue increased 8 percent to $102 million in 2024, which ranks No. 33 in the state when measured by that metric. The firm’s lawyer FTE headcount dropped slightly last year to 79.

“White & Case has an outstanding reputation for its deal work across the energy sector,” said Goldberg in the release. “I look forward to joining the Firm’s talented group of lawyers to further build on this momentum, and collaborate across its integrated global platform to further expand the M&A team in Houston.”

AREAS OF FOCUS
Goldberg focuses on mergers and acquisitions and energy transactions, including acquisitions, divestitures, joint ventures and project development, concentrating on upstream, midstream and energy transition projects.
