Akin Gump’s 2017 Successes

Founded in Dallas in 1945 and honored in 2017 for a fourth consecutive year as an Am Law A-List firm, Akin Gump remains one of the largest global firms with a strong Texas presence, boasting a multifaceted team of lawyers in five offices statewide.

In 2017, our Texas lawyers helped secure successful outcomes for marquee clients in some of the firm’s most complex engagements. For example:

• Akin Gump’s energy lawyers guided our clients through $60 billion in energy deals in 2017, while our capital markets practitioners handled over $33 billion in deals for clients such as Diamondback Energy and Gulfport Energy Corp.

• Akin Gump represented VCA, a leading U.S. provider of pet health care services, in its $9.1 billion acquisition by Mars, Incorporated, one of the world’s leading pet care providers.

• Our litigators helped Dallas’ Trinity Industries, Inc. overturn the largest False Claims Act judgment in history—$663 million—at the 5th Circuit.

• The firm represented 7-Eleven, Inc., the largest chain in the convenience-retailing industry, in its $3.3 billion acquisition of 1,110 convenience stores from Sunoco LP— one of the largest acquisitions in 7-Eleven’s history.

We focused on strategic growth, welcoming lateral partners to our Texas offices, such as Houston’s Kevin Cadwell, who brings valuable experience in complex, IP-focused commercial litigation and Robert Shearer, who has extensive experience with sophisticated, global energy transactions. Courtney York, a strong M&A practitioner in telecommunications, media and technology joined our Dallas office last fall. They join four newly promoted partners in Texas, who will continue to serve clients with all their transactional, advocacy and policy needs.

And in an area that has always been of great importance to the firm—pro bono service—Akin Gump continued its commitment by working with clients such as RAICES, Human Rights Initiative, KIPP Foundation, the Tahirih Justice Center and Texas Appleseed.
