(May 30) – Dallas-based Austin Industries has announced that prominent constructional lawyer D. Steven Henry will become the corporation’s chief legal officer and senior vice president on July 1.

Henry, who has led the construction industry practice at Gardere Wynne Sewell for nearly 27 years, has represented Austin Industries in several matters over the years.

Officials at Austin Industries, which is one of the largest construction firms in the U.S., said Henry is joining the company now because long-time General Counsel Charles Hardy is scheduled to retire at the end of 2014.

“Steve has represented Austin Industries as outside counsel for many years and has produced outstanding results,” said David B. Walls, Austin Industries president and CEO. “We’re pleased to have someone with Steve’s broad experience joining the executive team as Charles Hardy, our current general counsel, transitions toward his retirement.”

Walls said the company created the new position of chief legal officer to allow Henry to divide his time between assisting Austin Industries president and CEO in the administration and management of the company, while also providing oversight to all of the law department’s activities.

A graduate of Texas Tech University School of Law, Henry has represented many high-profile corporate clients during his time at Gardere, including Bell Helicopter, Texas Industries, Highland Homes and EMU Corp.

Austin Industries was founded in 1918 and is engaged in almost every type of civil, commercial and industrial construction in Texas, California, Georgia, Arizona, South Carolina and North Carolina. Austin also provides in-plant contract maintenance and capital construction services to the refining and petrochemical industries.
