(May 16) – A federal jury determined earlier this week that four Galveston police officers used excessive force when responding to a 2008 wedding party incident. But jurors deadlocked on a conclusion about former Astros pitcher Brandon Backe’s claims that his injuries from the police brawl ended his baseball career. Backe sought up to $13 million in damages, the Houston Chronicle reported.

Backe and his attorneys told the Chronicle and other reporters that he will seek a retrial of unresolved claims.

Jurors awarded nearly $50,000 in damages against the four police officers they determined used excessive force. A total of ten were sued. Four out of the 12 made settlement offers during the trial, but the status of those offers remained unknown during Monday’s verdict, the Chronicle reports.

Houston Yetter Coleman partners Charlie Parker and Jim Zucker and Dori Kornfeld Goldman represented the plaintiffs in the case.
