Cynthia Mabry Leaves Akin for Gibson Dunn

August 22, 2022 Claire Poole

Cynthia Mabry, formerly co-lead of the climate change group at Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld, has joined Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher as a corporate partner in the Houston office.

Mabry, who spent five years at Akin Gump, making partner in 2020, focuses her practice on advising public and private entities, investors and underwriters in capital markets and finance transactions, including offerings of equity and debt securities.

The lawyer specifically has done work for CenterPoint Energy, El Paso Electric, Diamondback Energy, Noble Energy (which was acquired by Chevron in 2020), SRC Energy, Cimarex Energy (which merged with Cabot Oil & Gas to become Coterra) and CNX Midstream.

Mabry also provides counsel on joint ventures, corporate governance and compliance matters, including advising clients on governance structures and legal issues related to climate change and environmental, social and corporate governance issues, or ESG.

The attorney earned a bachelor of science degree in accounting from Louisiana State University in 2004, working for almost three years at PwC in Houston. She then went on to law school, graduating cum laude from the University of Houston Law Center in 2010. She began her legal career at Thompson & Knight and Mayer Brown before joining Akin Gump in 2017.

Barbara Becker, chair and managing partner of Gibson Dunn in New York (a former co-chair of its M&A practice group), said in a statement that Mabry’s broad-based experience will complement its corporate platform in Texas and its global energy and ESG practices.

Hillary Holmes, partner and co-chair of the firm’s capital markets practice group, called Mabry a “dynamic, versatile and high-energy corporate attorney” who will be a valuable addition to the firm’s capital markets and governance practices.

“In addition, her deep experience counseling on emerging ESG issues will prove invaluable to our clients,” Holmes said.

Gibson Dunn’s Texas offices have been expanding this year, picking up corporate debt finance partner Fred Lee from Akin Gump in Dallas and partners Jesse Myers and Mike Piazza from Willkie Farr in Houston.
