(April 7) – Gruber Elrod Johansen Hail Shank recently announced that managing partner Mark Shank has been honored by the Dallas Bar Foundation with the 2016 Fellows Justinian Award.
The award – whose past recipients include Ron Kirk, Harriet Miers, Darrell Jordan and Shank’s colleague Mike Gruber – is presented annually to a local attorney and DBA member who exemplifies the organization’s commitment to professional and community service.
“We all went to law school, at least in part, for public service,” Shank said in accepting the award. “Helping people lifts us up, buoys our spirit, gives meaning to life and makes our lives richer. We are not judged by our deeds and accomplishments, but by what we do for, and how we treat, the least among us.”
Shank is a former president of the Dallas Bar Association, director for the State Bar of Texas, chairman of the Texas Bar Foundation, chairman of the Dallas Breakfast Group and chairman of Dallas Habitat for Humanity.
Shank was introduced and presented with the Justinian Award by Gruber, the 2012 Justinian Award winner, at a luncheon last week.
“Mark is a very good man – but not always a reasonable one. I once read that nothing is accomplished by the reasonable man,” Gruber said in his speech.
“I will say it is a good thing for us there are not more people like Mark. If there were, there would be absolutely no need for lawyers.”
