(Feb. 20) – After practicing for more than 30 years at Jackson Walker, employee benefits and ERISA veteran Jim Griffin has joined Dallas law firm Scheef & Stone.
Griffin says the idea for a “lifestyle change” entered his mind after he reached his 30th anniversary at Jackson Walker a couple of years ago.
“At the end of 2017, things seemed right for a new adventure,” he said. “It will be a good run at Scheef & Stone for the next eight years.”
The SMU Dedman School of Law graduate represents clients in a wide variety of employee benefit plan matters involving 401(k) plans, group benefits and incentive arrangements.
He says ERISA lawyers and their clients will be paying attention to several aspects of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. Specifically, he mentioned a new stock option provision that will be of significant interest to smaller companies.
“It is one more tool in the toolbox for entrepreneurs to consider as a way to compensate their valuable employees,” he said.
In the nonprofit sector, Griffin highlighted the penalty tax assessed on nonprofit entities that pay salaries in excess of $1 million. He says it will be interesting to see how clients respond to the new tax.
