(Aug. 3) – Bill Powers, the former president and law school dean of the University of Texas in Austin, announced Monday that he is joining the Dallas-based law firm Jackson Walker as counsel.
Powers, in an interview with The Texas Lawbook, said he will continue teaching full-time at UT, but that he plans to work a limited number of hours with the appellate lawyers and those who specialize in corporate governance at Jackson Walker.
“I like being part of a team and I like it that Jackson Walker is a large law firm with diverse practice areas but that it still focuses on Texas,” Powers told The Texas Lawbook. “I also want to contribute to the professional development of young lawyers and help the firm with client development.”
Powers, who is 69, said that he has several close friends who are partners at Jackson Walker and that they have talked for years about him possibly joining the 350-lawyer firm.
“Wade Cooper, who is the managing partner, was actually in my torts class in 1978,” Powers said.
Cooper said that Powers “would top just about anyone’s list of the most influential attorneys” in Texas.
“We believe he will be an invaluable resource to our clients and the firm,” Cooper said in a written statement.
Powers served as UT’s president from 2005 to 2015. He was dean of the law school for the five years before that.
