(July 24) – Barry Burgdorf, the general counsel for the University of Texas System from 2005 to 2013, has joined Pillsbury as special counsel in Austin, the firm announced today.
Burgdorf was most recently the chief operating officer at Remeditex Ventures, a $300 million biotech venture capital firm. He has also served as COO and general counsel at VuComp from 2013 to 2015, is an ex-corporate and technology partner at Vinson & Elkins and was the first general counsel of Samsung Austin Semiconductor.
As vice chancellor and general counsel for the UT System in Austin, Burgdorf oversaw the legal needs of nine universities and six health institutions. He also led a legal team of 36 attorneys.
At Pillsbury, Burgdorf joins forces with his old counterpart Andrew Strong, who is the former general counsel of Texas A&M University.
“Barry builds on our substantial biotech practice, and he supercharges our education practice,” Strong, now a partner at Pillsbury in Houston and Austin, said in a statement.
“With the connections between academia and biotech growing, he helps us build on those relationships, particularly as they commercialize their inventions.”
Burgdorf is the firm’s 20th lawyer in the Austin office, which opened in 2014.
“Once I became available, Andrew invited me to join him and help strengthen the firm’s life, science, technology and education practices,” he said in a statement. “With Pillsbury on a growth trajectory in Texas, I jumped at the offer.”
