By Kerry Curry — October 1 — The Philadelphia law firm of Fox Rothschild established its first Texas office via a merger with Dallas firm David & Goodman P.C.

All of David & Goodman’s 18 lawyers have joined Fox, a 107-year-old firm with 600 attorneys spread across 20 offices.

Clinton J. David, founder of David & Goodman, said Fox had clients based in Texas or with significant operations in the state, and said the firm had been looking to establish an office in the Lone Star State.

A mutual client of each firm introduced the two firms.

David said he was helping a N.J.-based client sell a manufacturing plant in Texas and when he met the client principal in person in Dallas he learned the client was represented in other matters by Fox Rothschild.

“We started chatting and he said, co-incidentally, he has a brother-in-law who is the co-chair of a big national firm with offices all over the country and asked if I had ever considered merging.”

David said he considered merger opportunities in the past but had never found the right cultural fit. He passed along his business card to the client and two days later he received a call from Fox’s Mark Silow, the firmwide managing partner and his client’s brother-in-law, Abe Reich, co-chair of the firm.

Three months later, the merger was consummated.

David started David & Goodman in 1984 with himself and a secretary and built it up to an 18-lawyer firm. He knew if he were going to merge the firm, it would need to be with a compatible culture, he said.

“I found that in Fox Rothschild,” David said. “People go to Fox Rothschild and they stay. It’s an entrepreneurial firm, which ours is. Our rate structures are the same. We were very compatible,” he said.

The deal is a game-changer, he said.

“We have the opportunity to grow the Fox brand and footprint not just in Dallas, but throughout the state,” he said. “It’s a great way to move our law firm forward into the next generation on a full-service national platform. We couldn’t be more excited.”

Fox added all of David & Goodman’s attorneys. They are as follows: Partners, Christopher I. Clark, David Grant Crooks, Clinton J. David, Abby L. Ewing, Mark A. Goodman, Daniel J. Madden, Brett L. Myers, Robert J. Palmer and Michael S. Rumac. Douglas M. Berman and Darrell D. Minter join as Counsel. Joining as Associates are K. Patrick Babb, Tressie E. McKeon, Andrew Nikolopoulos, Blair M. Partlow, Monica M. Peters, Erin Watkins and Ashley E. Wysocki.
