Houston Law Firm Adds Former Texas Supreme Court Justice to Name

September 3, 2025 Alexa Shrake

Houston law firm Wright Close & Barger is adding former Texas Supreme Court Justice Eva Guzman to its name.

Guzman, who stepped down from the bench in 2021, joined the firm as a partner in 2022, after spending about a year as a shareholder at the Houston law firm of Chamberlain Hrdlicka.

She was the first Latina to serve on the Texas Supreme Court and the first to hold a statewide office in Texas. Prior to serving on Texas’s highest civil court, she was a justice on the Fourteenth Court of Appeals and a Harris County District Court judge. In more than two decades on the bench, she authored more than 900 judicial opinions.

“This is an exciting new era for Wright Close Barger & Guzman,”  Wright Close Barger & Guzman partner Jessica Barger said in a news release. “A new name, a new home, but the same commitment to both appellate and trial excellence.”

Guzman currently focuses her practice on civil cases in state and federal court, both at the trial and appellate level and advises on cases in arbitration and mediation, too.

“Adding Justice Guzman as a name partner was an incredibly easy decision,” Wright Close Barger & Guzman partner Tom Wright said in the release. “She is a trailblazer. We could not be prouder to have a lawyer of her caliber as our partner, and we are happy to recognize her legal talents and experience through this name change.”

In July, Justice Guzman was one of five women inducted into the Texas Women’s Hall of Fame in recognition of “outstanding achievements and for changing the course of Texas history.”

In August, the firm announced it is moving its office to the TC Energy Center in Downtown Houston.

Guzman called it “an honor” in the release to be a named partner at the firm.
