(Feb. 19) – General Motors announced Thursday that it has selected LyondellBasell Industries Chief Legal Officer Craig Glidden of Houston to be its new general counsel.
Glidden, who is one of the most respected corporate lawyers in Texas, takes over the top legal job at the nation’s largest automaker on March 1. He replaces current GC Michael Millikin, who has come under intense scrutiny for how the company handled its faulty ignition switch scandal.
GM’s announcement that Glidden is its new GC surprised many legal experts because the car maker has traditionally chosen lawyers within the auto industry.
Glidden has been the general counsel at LyondellBasell since 2009. Before that, he was the GC at ChevronPhillips Chemical Co.
Kaplan was with Glidden at Chevron Phillips and then also went to LyondellBasell in 2009. He is a 1992 graduate of the University of Texas School of Law.
“Craig is one of the finest legal minds you will ever find,” says Martin Beirne, founder of the Houston law firm Beirne Maynard. “He is an innovative business leader, accessible and fully appreciates the value of outside counsel.”
Glidden was a partner at Beirne Maynard when he left in 1996 to join ChevronPhillips. Kaplan was a junior partner at the firm, too.
“Jeff was a great trial lawyer in private practice and has terrific business skills,” Beirne says.
