(May 31) – K&L Gates recently announced that it has strengthened its energy litigation practice in Houston with the addition of partner Michael T. Murphy.
Murphy lateraled over from Vinson & Elkins. He said K&L Gates presented an “exciting opportunity” to join a growing practice in Texas.
“The firm’s multinational platform and collaborative culture made K&L an easy draw,” he said.
Murphy said it is a unique time in the energy industry.
He says clients are increasingly facing the risks and liabilities surrounding the transfer of distressed assets, the fulfillment of contractual obligations that were created under vastly different economic conditions and the threats posed by potentially insolvent companies.
In the past year, Murphy said two of the most interesting matters he handled were a high profile environmental release from a train derailment and a contentious commercial dispute triggered by depressed commodities prices. He says these two cases illustrate the broad spectrum of litigation issues facing energy clients.
