By Natalie Posgate – (October 1) – After spending more than a decade at Bracewell & Giuliani and about two decades as the general counsel of the San Antonio Spurs, Tullos Wells is starting a new chapter of his career as the managing director of the Kronkosky Charitable Foundation.
The Foundation, which was established in 1991, is the single largest gift made to the South Texas region. It awards more than $15 million annually to support programs in San Antonio and its three surrounding counties that are devoted to health and human services; cultural activities; parks, zoos and wildlife sanctuaries; animal cruelty prevention and public disaster relief for victims.
Wells succeeds Palmer Moe, who retired from the Foundation in May. When the headhunter came calling, Wells said he decided to take the job because the Foundation gave him the opportunity to contribute to his community in a unique way.
“This organization plays a huge role in the fabric of these communities,” the University of Texas School of Law graduate said. “The ability to even play a small role in helping these four counties meet their health, human resources and other needs was something I couldn’t pass up.”
A former managing partner in the San Antonio office of Bracewell, Wells said he will still hold an of counsel position at the firm to continue assisting his clients when called upon.
In addition to the Spurs, Wells serves as general counsel to the WNBA San Antonio Silver Stars, AHL San Antonio Rampage and the NBA Development League Austin Toros. His legal expertise is in union avoidance and managing relationships, collective bargaining and handling unfair labor practice charges. He has also assisted clients with government investigations and government contracting issues.
Wells believes his longtime career with these clients has prepared him for his new gig because he has learned to get information in a useful and understandable format and bring people together to meet a goal (such as reaching negotiations for various sports issues).
At the Kronkosky Foundation, Wells said he most looks forward to gaining a deeper understanding of the needs of the Bexar, Bandera, Comal and Kendall counties the Foundation devotes itself to, as well as getting to know better his new colleagues, “who spend their lives trying to make life better for people in need.”
He said a notable cause the Foundation has been dedicated to for the past 17 years is its Precious Minds, New Connections initiative, which promotes healthy early childhood development by directing resources for parenting education to young parents.
Wells sent his praises to the “terrific staff” and “very devoted grant committee” that the Kronkosky Charitable Foundation has.
“I’ve been amazed at how well-oiled this machine is and how devoted these folks are to our nation,” he said. “It truly is an honor to get to work with them.”
