(July 30) – Working Women magazine named two Houston-based law firms – Norton Rose Fulbright and Vinson & Elkins – among the 50 best large legal practices for retaining and promoting women lawyers in the U.S.
The magazine teamed with the group Flexi-time Lawyers LLC to create a formula that measured key practices and elements, including flexible work arrangements, paid parental leave and compensation parity.
The publication also examined the firms for percentage of women equity partners and the number of women in senior leadership roles.
Only two Texas-based law firms are ranked in the top 50.
Working Women wrote that Norton Rose Fulbright has “a strong system in place to lift up women at this firm.
“Its Career Strategies Program nurtures female senior associates toward Partnership, and its Women in Norton Rose Fulbright Leadership Committee develops female partners. Attorneys may work nontraditional or reduced hours,” the magazine reported.
The magazine reports that women comprise 21 percent of the equity partnerships at Norton Rose Fulbright and 31 percent of the non-equity partnerships. The firm has eight percent of its lawyers working a reduced hourly schedule.
Working Women reports that 16 percent of the equity partners at Vinson & Elkins are women and that six percent of its lawyers worked reduced hours.
“Experienced parents mentor new ones at this firm, which gives attorneys at least 12 weeks off after a birth or adoption and provides subsidized infant and backup care,” the magazine stated. “Everyone is able to work remotely or adjust hours to meet personal and professional obligations.”
Several national law firms with offices in Texas are listed in the top 50, including Baker & McKenzie, Hunton & Williams, Kirkland & Ellis, King & Spalding, Latham & Watkins, McDermott, Pillsbury and Sidley.
