The Houston Chronicle reports that a special three-judge panel has dismissed multiple allegations of misconduct against Judge Edith Jones of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit in New Orleans.
Judge Jones, widely acclaimed as one of the smartest and most conservative jurists on the federal bench, had been accused by a handful of legal activist groups, civil rights organizations and anti-death penalty lawyers of making improper statements that they claimed showed her bias against ethnic minorities and criminal defendants who claim they are mentally disabled.
The judge, who was appointed to the federal appeals court by President Ronald Reagan, denied the allegations and said her comments were taken out of context.
