Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough has nearly doubled its nascent Houston presence by bringing on a nine-lawyer tax controversy group from Chamberlain Hrdlicka, the South Carolina-based firm announced Monday.
Nelson Mullins opened in Houston in April with a team of 10 attorneys from five different firms. The Chamberlain Hrdlicka expats are headlined by Juan Vasquez, Jr., who will lead Nelson Mullins’ nationwide tax controversy and litigation practice; Peter Lowy, who will lead the firm’s state and local tax practice; and former Texas Supreme Court Justice David Medina.
The new Nelson Mullins hires also include partners Stuart Clements and David Calvillo and associates Tania Albuja, Emmanuel Almarez and Tristan Montaque.
“We are excited to continue the build our Houston office with the addition of such a talented group of tax attorneys,” Nelson Mullins managing partner Jim Lehman said in a statement. “We are pleased with the growth of our firm in the Texas market in both Houston and Dallas, and we welcome the new opportunities this new group brings to our firm.”
Vasquez and Lowy are past honorees of the ABA Tax Section’s nationwide pro bono award and past chairs of the Tax Section’s Court Procedure and Practice Committee.
It marks the second straight week Chamberlain Hrdlicka has seen departures from its tax practice. The firm lost international tax partner Phyllis Guillory to Womble last week.
