(Jan. 19) – Tricia Hobson arrived Thursday in Houston, which is 8,581 miles from her home in Australia.

As the new Global Chair of Norton Rose Fulbright, Hobson is touring the firm’s Texas offices as part of her new mission as its internal ambassador.

Tricia Hobson
“I love Texas,” she told The Texas Lawbook in an interview Thursday. “The Texas offices are incredibly important to our firm’s growth globally. Texas has such a strong economy and there’s a lot of great legal work going on here.”

Five years ago, Houston-based Fulbright & Jaworski announced it was merging with London-based Norton Rose.

Today, Norton Rose Fulbright is the fourth largest legal operation in the world with 3,892 lawyers in 58 offices. The firm still has four offices in Texas with 427 lawyers statewide, including 187 attorneys in Houston and 117 lawyers in Dallas. The Texas Lawbook reported last year that Norton Rose Fulbright generated $341.6 million from its Texas operations.

Hobson said her mission is simple: learn the expertise of her colleagues in outposts around the globe and foster the firm’s cross-border collaboration, innovation and client relationship development. She said her job is to help Norton Rose Fulbright lawyers in Texas take full advantage of the firm’s great network of lawyers across the oceans.

“Our job is connecting our lawyers to each other,” she said. “At the end of the day, we are partners at one law firm.”

A trial lawyer who specializes in class action lawsuits in Australia, Hobson said her international travels have taught her that Texas is known universally for its great trial lawyers.

“Texas has a unique reputation around the world,” she said. “Some of the best trial lawyers in the world are here in Texas and they are great characters.

“Texas lawyers are bigger than life,” Hobson said.
