(Aug. 11) – Norton Rose Fulbright enhanced its insurance litigation practice by adding a team of three lawyers headlined by Neel Lane to its San Antonio office, the firm announced this week.

Lane and senior associates Manuel Mungia, Jr. and Matthew Pepping were previously at Akin Gump. Lane says joining Norton Rose Fulbright was an “impossible opportunity to pass up.

“Fulbright has tremendous deep roots in trial lawyering and litigation and Norton Rose has tremendous relationships with British-based insurers,” he said.

Lane is currently representing underwriters in dozens of lawsuits in connection with the collapse of Stanford Financial Group. He says the litigation involves hundreds of claims with up to $7 billion in total exposure.

“Neel has an impressive international presence, further strengthening our financial institutions and business litigation practice. His experience representing London- and US-based insurers will greatly benefit our clients globally,” Linda Addison, Norton Rose Fulbright’s U.S. managing partner, said in a statement.

The University of Texas School of Law graduate says a hot topic in his insurance litigation practice is gaining clarity around exclusions in directors’ and officers’ policies, particularly as it relates to high exposure circumstances such as money laundering.

“It is important to have clarity so insurers know what they are underwriting and the insureds know what they are covered for,” he said.

In addition to his private litigation practice, Lane has been involved in a number of significant pro bono cases.

Earlier this year, Lane and a team of Akin Gump lawyers teamed up with the University of Texas School of Law Civil Rights Clinic to represent three children in a lawsuit alleging school police brutality.

In another high-profile pro bono effort that concluded last year, Lane represented two same-sex couples in challenging and eventually defeating the state’s gay marriage ban.
