Premium Subscriber Q&A: Stephen Myers, Match Group

January 2, 2026 Mark Curriden

In this Q&A with The Texas Lawbook, Match Group’s Stephen Myers discusses the traits he seeks in outside counsel, what outside counsel need to know when working with him and more.

Texas Lawbook: What do you look for in hiring outside counsel?

Stephen Myers: I look for outside counsel with deep subject-matter expertise and a proven track record handling matters comparable to ours. Rates must be competitive, but we also place significant value on counsel who are proactive, strategic, and creative, and who consistently look for ways to drive strong results rather than simply respond to issues as they arise.

Lawbook: What does outside counsel need to know about you and Match’s legal department if they are seeking your work?

Myers: Match’s Litigation & IP team is highly engaged and collaborative. We view our relationships with outside counsel as true partnerships and expect to be closely involved in shaping strategy, evaluating risk, and making key decisions. We operate at a fast pace and value counsel who can keep up, communicate proactively, and respond with urgency when needed. Transparency, responsiveness, and alignment with our business objectives are essential.

Lawbook: What are your thoughts on outside lawyer hourly rates and alternative fee arrangements?

Myers: I expect hourly rates to be reasonable and reflective of the value delivered. I am also open to alternative fee arrangements when they are thoughtfully structured and appropriate for the matter, particularly where they align incentives and promote efficiency.

Lawbook: What are your pet peeves about outside counsel?

Myers: I don’t like surprises, and I don’t like being presented with problems without proposed solutions. I expect outside counsel to communicate early, flag issues proactively, and come prepared with thoughtful options and recommendations.
