Sidley Signs O&G Leader from Akin

May 29, 2024 Brooks Igo

Sidley Austin strengthened its energy offerings this week by adding Houston partner Stephen M. Boone, Jr., who previously led the U.S. oil and gas practice at Akin.

Boone advises public and private companies and investment funds, including exploration and production companies and midstream companies’ private equity funds, on mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, and other finance and project development matters. He joins a bench of more than 150 lawyers in Sidley’s energy, transportation, and infrastructure group.

Cliff Vrielink, co-managing partner of Sidley’s Houston office and a member of the firm’s executive committee, said in a statement that “Stephen brings strong industry knowledge and significant corporate experience in both the upstream and midstream sectors that adds to our comprehensive capabilities in these areas.”

In January, Boone was a lead lawyer on Talos Energy’s acquisition of QuarterNorth for $1.29 billion. Last fall, he ran point on Diamondback Energy subsidiary Viper Energy Partners’ $1 billion deal for oil interests from Warwick Capital Partners and GRP Energy Capital.

According to The Texas Lawbook’s Corporate Deal Tracker database, Boone was lead or co-lead on at least four deals in 2023.

Before obtaining his law degree from Baylor, Boone worked for a couple years as a project control specialist at Fluor. He started his legal career at Bracewell in 2010, where he worked for six years before moving to Akin. He made partner at Akin in 2019.
