The week that ended Nov. 22 saw 20 deals reported with a total reported value of $5.5 billion, heavy on deal volume and private equity transactions, including a PE firm buying a majority stake in Topgolf.
The seven days prior saw 16 deals at $16.4 billion, marking ten straight deal-weeks of $11 billion or more. Tailing that streak, a week in the single-digit billions seems like a literal downer.
But this time last year saw fewer deals (15) at a lower reported value ($4.55 billion), and a heavy volume of private transactions tends to depress reported values.
It proved a special week for SPACs. Three special acquisition corporations found targets. One runs a datacenter near Niagara Falls, another uses AI to find companies with retiring owners without a succession plan, and the third target is an Australian mining firm owned by a Chinese coal company that merged with a SPAC controlled by an Italian investor living in Cambodia.
Also last week, Insight Partners and some VC cohorts provided seed funding to an Israeli AI cybersecurity start-up and a Silicon Valley industrial data company, while a Colorado clean energy company added equity commitments for their battery storage projects under construction in Texas.
A PE firm in The Woodlands closed a $1.2 billion fund to invest in power plants; a Houston manufacturer of industrial components got PE money to expand; Carlyle – and its $474 billion AUM – acquired an Austin pharmacy for the disabled and behavioral health communities; Fort Worth’s TPG bought a stake in Charlotte’s Pike Corp.; and Dallas’ Trinity Hunt Partners bought a Portland pavement maintenance company.
Elsewhere, credit reporting agency Equifax acquired a Florida HR company that helps verifiers “make more informed decisions in less time.”
