Rhode Island-based sterilization company Cosmed Group and its affiliated company Spicey Partners Real Estate have filed for bankruptcy in the Southern District of Texas.
According to court documents seeking Chapter 11 restructuring protection, Cosmed is being advised by Greenberg Traurig, including Houston shareholder David Eastlake, and is claiming between $100 million and $500 million in liabilities but only $10 million to $50 million in assets.
Cosmed is facing significant litigation regarding allegations of cancer claims over its alleged use of ethylene oxide gas. Eight of the nine creditors listed are law firms involved in the litigation.
The case has been assigned to Houston Bankruptcy Judge Christopher Lopez, who is quickly becoming one of the busiest judges in the nation handling large, complex business banrkuptcies.
