(April 10) – Dallas-based Strasburger & Price, a corporate law firm in Texas for more than 75 years, confirmed Tuesday that it is merging with Detroit-based Clark Hill.
As reported in The Texas Lawbook in January, leaders for the two middle-market corporate law firms have been involved in merger negotiations since last year, and had hoped to complete the transaction in March.
Clark Hill, which has about 450 lawyers in 17 offices, will essentially acquire Strasburger, which has about 200 lawyers in nine offices in Texas, Mexico, New York and Washington, D.C. The firm will operate in Texas as Clark Strasburger, but as Clark Hill everywhere else.
The combined firm will have more than 600 lawyers and annual revenues of about $270 million.
“Both firms already have deep regional roots and together have a national reach in the key industries and practices driving the global economy,” said Dan Butcher, managing partner of Strasburger. “This combination will expand our ability to help clients take advantage of business opportunities and resolve their legal challenges.”
The merger marks the third combination this month between a national firm and a major Texas firm. Last week, Andrews Kurth Kenyon merged with Richmond-based Hunton & Williams and Milwaukee-based Foley & Lardner acquired Dallas-based Gardere Wynne Sewell.
Founded in 1939, Dallas-based Strasburger has offices in Austin, Beaumont, Collin County, Dallas, Houston, Mexico City, New York, San Antonio, and Washington, D.C. The Texas Lawbook reported last year that Strasburger’s revenues were $94 million in 2016 and that revenues per lawyer were $480,000.
Founded in 1890, Clark Hill is an entrepreneurial firm that provides business, government and public affairs, and personal legal services to clients in the U.S. and abroad from offices coast to coast and in Dublin, Ireland.
“Strasburger’s core values and culture are well aligned with ours and its commitment to the highest levels of client and community service is just as strong,” said John Hern, CEO of Clark Hill. “This merger aligns perfectly with our strategy of expanding into high growth markets which is also where our clients are moving and where they need our services.”
Clark Hill has been in expansion mode since 2013 beginning with a merger with Thorp Reed & Armstrong, adding 100 lawyers. The firm completed another significant combination in 2017 with Morris Polich & Purdy LLP adding nearly 100 lawyers and four offices in California and Nevada.
