Texas Lawbook Remembers Two Journalists Who Loved Their Work and Died Far Too Soon

December 13, 2022 Mark Curriden

The Texas Lawbook family this past weekend lost two of its extended family – Dallas Business Journal photographer Jake Dean and former Houston Chronicle and Dallas Morning News writer and editor Michael Lindenberger.

Dean was 50; Lindenberger was 51. Both were great journalists. Both will be greatly missed.

Dean, who worked for the DBJ since 2001, took scores and scores of photos of lawyers for The Lawbook, especially photos of finalists for the DFW Corporate Counsel Awards. He died from complications tied to a condition called acute necrotizing pancreatitis.

Jake Dean took a self-portrait with his two dogs as part of a Dallas Business Journal “work-from-home” project during the pandemic in 2020

Our good friend and colleague, DBJ Editor Jeff Schnick authored this wonderful article about Dean in the Dallas Business Journal. It is a must read.

Lindenberger was a huge supporter and adviser of The Lawbook. As the Houston Chronicle’s deputy editorial page editor, he published several Lawbook articles. Earlier this year, he was part of the Chronicle team that won the Pulitzer prize.

Michael Lindenberger

He was especially proud of Natalie Posgate and Brooks Igo, who he met when they first joined the Lawbook out of college in 2012. He was friends with the Lawbook’s Bruce Tomaso and worked with Allen Pusey during their time together at The Dallas Morning News. Lindenberger loved great food and fine bourbon – both of which he and I enjoyed together with friends such as Eric Torbenson, Rick Alm and Colby Walton.

Here is an article from the Kansas City Star, the newspaper he joined last year, about his life and death: https://www.kansascity.com/news/local/article269917722.html.
