(Aug. 31) – Vinson & Elkins recently announced that the firm boosted its corporate technology team with the addition of Paul Tobias as a partner in Austin.
Tobias jumps to V&E from Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, where he helped launch that firm’s Austin office. He rejoins his former colleague Craig Tyler, who was one of the five IP partners in Texas V&E added in June.
“I am impressed with the vision of the firm and the quality of its lawyers and people,” he said.
The University of Texas School of Law graduate represents technology companies from startup and venture financing to acquisitions and public offerings. He says V&E’s expertise in private equity and IPOs is a key reason he is “thrilled” to join their ranks.
Tobias noted that private equity firms have been spending more time in the tech arena over the last decade, a trend he says is even more pronounced now.
In a deal that closed in January, Tobias advised HomeAway, a global vacation marketplace, in its acquisition by travel giant Expedia for approximately $3.9 billion.
“I was able to see the lifecycle [of HomeAway],” he said. “I saw the co-founders from the company’s inception. That’s what makes my job interesting.”
