(Oct. 8) – The Minority Corporate Counsel Association has selected Vinson & Elkins to receive its annual Thomas L. Sager Award for the South region. The award recognizes law firms for their efforts in promoting diversity.
This is the third time V&E has won the award. It was also honored in 2008 and 2009.
V&E Chairman Mark Kelly said the award recognizes the many things V&E is doing to encourage diversity at the firm.
“It is an area of intense focus,” Kelly said.
Kelly chairs the firm’s diversity and inclusion efforts to show that the firm is committed to diversity, he said. Managing Partner Scott Wulfe and partner Trina Chandler also help head the firm’s diversity efforts.
“We’ve tried to be very proactive in our diversity and inclusion efforts,” Kelly said.
Joseph West, president and CEO of MCCA, said the association had a “tremendous number” of applicants.
“Vinson & Elkins is committed to a more diverse and inclusive law environment, and we see this to be true with more than 25 years of pipeline retention,” he said.
Kelly said diversity is a priority for the firm and that a more diverse firm will be good for V&E and its client base.
“We are focused on it and we want to give emphasis to it,” Kelly said. “We’ve got a ways to go.”
The other firms honored by MCCA were Arnold & Porter, Lim Ruger, Ogletree Deakins and Shearman & Sterling.
