Winstead Adds Shareholder to IP Group

February 21, 2024 Krista Torralva

Winstead announced Wednesday that Austin C. Teng has joined the firm from Kirkland & Ellis as a shareholder in its intellectual property group.

Teng, a former software engineer, focuses his practice on patent-infringement, trade-secret litigation and other technology-related matters.

Over the last few years, Teng has worked on matters for Samsung, Avago Technologies and MOSAID Technologies. He is based in Austin.

“As our Winstead team continues to amass significant trial wins, adding a trial lawyer with Austin’s technical expertise, trial experience, and proven track record to our intellectual property litigation group deepens our bench and enhances our strong team,” said Phillip Philbin, shareholder and chair of Winstead’s business litigation group.

Winstead won one of the state’s biggest jury verdicts last year. A Winstead team including Philbin partnered with firms Irell & Manella and Ciccarelli Law to obtain a $240 million verdict for client StreamScale in its patent infringement lawsuit against California-based data management company Cloudera.

Teng said in a news release he was “thrilled” to join Winstead.

“Winstead has assembled an impressive team of smart and savvy trial lawyers with a proven record of delivering clients wins in a strategic and nimble manner,” he said.

After receiving his law degree from SMU in 2014, Teng started his career at the IP boutique law firm Carstens & Cahoon. He then moved to Thompson & Knight, where he practiced for nearly six years before joining Kirkland.
