(Feb. 16) – Winston & Strawn announced Thursday that it has beefed up its energy capabilities in Houston with the addition of two oil and gas litigation partners.

Hugh Tanner and Denise Scofield jumped to Winston from Morgan Lewis & Bockius, where Tanner led the Houston office and chaired the firm’s oil and gas litigation group.

“Winston was a better fit for us and our oil and gas trial practice, which includes oilfield services companies,” Tanner said. “There is a natural synergy between the type of work we do and the practice established at Winston.”

Scofield added that Winston’s “geographic reach and breadth of practice” brings value to her clients.

The two lawyers say they have seen an uptick in lawsuits against oilfield services companies that resulted from the Deepwater Horizon litigation involving offshore contracts in the Gulf of Mexico. Tanner and Scofield successfully represented a client in that litigation. The resulting court rulings and interpretations of contracts and new regulations have affected a number of companies they represent.

“Of course in the oil patch, there is always a variety of disputes for us to tackle,” Tanner said.
