(Jan. 18) – Chicago-based Winston & Strawn is expected to announce in the next few days that it is opening an office in Dallas.
Winston, which has more than 800 lawyers in 18 offices worldwide, is snatching lateral hires away from Fish & Richardson, Jones Day and Locke Lord. Dallas will be the firm’s 19th office.
Several high-profile names are among those leaving their current law firms to start the Winston office in North Texas, including Locke Lord partner Bryan Goolsby, who specializes in real estate investment trusts.
Sources say that Winston is trying to have about two-dozen lawyers signed up by the time the firm opens in a few weeks in Dallas. Winston has reportedly hired elite Houston legal recruiter Clint Johnson of Johnson/Downie to lead its efforts to bring together its new team.
Winston opened its Houston outpost in March 2011. The firm has attracted several prominent lawyers to join the Houston office in recent years, including John Strasburger and Paula Hinton. Winston currently has 41 lawyers in Houston.
Winston actually has a longer history in Texas. Partner Dan Webb, who is a legendary trial lawyer and former federal prosecutor, spent a couple years living at the Sheraton Four Points Hotel in Texarkana while he represented Philip Morris when then-Texas Attorney General Dan Morales sued the cigarettes makers for fraudulently marketing its products in the state.
