(January 15)–Franchise and distribution expert Wayne P. Bunch, Jr. became the ninth partner and 25th lawyer in DLA Piper’s nearly six-year-old Houston office, the firm announced last week.

“Wayne is among the most highly regarded franchise lawyers in Texas and has an impressive skillset in the rapidly growing field of domestic and international distribution, licensing and franchising law,” said Dennis Wieczorek, chair of DLA Piper’s Franchise and Distribution practice, in a statement issued by the firm. “His experience working with start-up and middle market companies, as well as serving as an officer for a national franchise company, will deepen the capabilities of the firm’s preeminent franchise and distribution practice.”

The former Jackson Walker partner served as general counsel, president and CEO for Crescent City Beignets Inc. and operated his own boutique law firm earlier in his career. He said the move to DLA Piper will benefit his practice and clients greatly.

“As my practice grew, it became clear that the majority of my clients had legal needs that extended beyond my franchise expertise,” he said.
Bunch said his experience handling both business and legal issues as CEO and general counsel of a start-up franchisor provided him with valuable insights in his private practice.

“Having walked in my franchisor’s shoes, so to speak, I have a very clear understanding of the challenges they face on both a micro and macro level,” he said. “As a result, my clients appreciate my practical insight and guidance.”

Most recently, Bunch handled the sale of two companies that he developed the franchise programs for. One was a fast casual burrito chain and the other was a franchised insurance company.

“It was gratifying to see both of these brands grow successfully and see the founders monetize their hard work,” he said.

In the year ahead, the new DLA Piper partner said many franchisors, including many of his clients, are considering international expansion.
