By Brooks Igo – (January 8) – Locke Lord recently announced that Austin of counsel Barbara Ellis will be honored at the Austin Bar Foundation Gala on January 31 with the David H. Walter Community Excellence Award, the highest award given to an Austin Bar member by the Austin Bar Foundation Board of Directors.

This isn’t the first time Ellis has been recognized for her commitment to pro bono and community service. She had an incredible 2014.

The Travis County Women Lawyers’ Association and the Travis County Women Lawyers’ Foundation awarded her its 2014 Pro Bono Award and the Texas Tech Law School Alumni Association named her the winner of the 2014 Hershell L. Barnes Ambassador Award.

In August, she was appointed by the Texas Supreme Court to serve as a member of the 9-member Board of Law Examiners, the state board that oversees the admission of lawyers to practice in Texas. Two months later, she was named the top individual fundraiser of the American Heart Association’s Austin Heart Walk.

Ellis, a litigator, has represented pro bono clients in family law cases through Volunteer Legal Services (VLS) of Central Texas, a nonprofit that provides legal services to abuse victims, people with disabilities and those living in poverty. She has served in various roles, including president, on VLS’ board of directors for nearly 10 years.
