(Nov. 24) – The oil and gas turbulence has claimed its first victim in the legal industry. Richard Burleson announced today that the firm he started a decade ago will close down all of its operations at the end of the year.
Houston-based Burleson has about 65 lawyers in five cities, including San Antonio, Denver, New Orleans and Pittsburgh. About one-third of the firm’s lawyers are based in its Texas offices.
Burleson promoted the fact that its attorneys were more than just lawyers – they were former petroleum engineers, drillers and landmen.
Burleson grew steadily as the oil industry expanded with the development of fracking. There were more than 130 lawyers at the firm just 15 months ago.
As oil and gas prices dipped during the past 18 months, Burleson slowly trimmed staff, but the cutbacks were not enough.
