(Feb. 21) – Former Texas Supreme Court Justice Dale Wainwright is jumping to Greenberg Traurig in Austin to chair its Texas Appellate Group, the firm announced today.

Wainwright was previously the managing partner of the Austin office at Bracewell, where he practiced for nearly five years after stepping down from the state’s highest court.

“The opportunity at Greenberg Traurig got my attention,” he said. “I have a number of good friends here, and I look forward to the opportunity to lead and grow the firm’s Texas appellate practice with first-rate advocacy.”

Wainwright, who served a 10-year tenure at the Texas Supreme Court, was the first African American lawyer in state history elected to the court. He began his judicial career in 1999 when then-Governor George W. Bush appointed him to the 334th Civil Judicial District Court in Houston.

“Dale was not only a tremendous jurist, he warrants the highest compliment one can give an appellate specialist: he is a true ‘lawyer’s lawyer,’” Mary-Olga Lovett, co-regional operating shareholder of Greenberg Traurig’s Texas offices, said in a statement.

Wainwright, who is looking to expand his new firm’s appellate practice, says he has read and analyzed close to 80,000 briefs and presided over more than 600 oral arguments throughout his career.

“I understand the importance of oral advocacy and excellent writing,” he said.

Last June, Wainwright scored a victory for the Doctors Hospital at Renaissance Ltd. when the Supreme Court of Texas found his client not liable for a botched delivery by one of its physician partners.

Wainwright sits on the board of directors of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Litigation Center, which directs the litigation and amicus involvement of the Chamber in cases across the country. He is also the chairman of the Texas Board of Criminal Justice, a position he was appointed to by Governor Greg Abbott in 2015.
