Houston Appellate Lawyer Moves from One Prominent Plaintiffs Firm to Another

October 21, 2022 Brooks Igo

Victor Thomas, a former staff attorney for the 14th Court of Appeals in Houston, jumped from one prominent plaintiffs firm to another this week.

After two years at The Lanier Law Firm, Thomas is joining Sorrels Law to lead its appellate practice.

“This is a huge addition to our team to help protect the rights of our clients in all aspects of their cases, and he will be in charge of the growing volume of appeals and complex legal issues that arise from serious, high stakes litigation,” Alex Farias-Sorrels, co-founder of Sorrels Law, said in a statement.

Thomas is part of the team handling the appeal in Cruz v. Allied Aviation, seeking to uphold what is believed to be the largest personal injury, actual damages verdict for an injured worker in a contested case in U.S. history.

Thomas’ past successes include obtaining the affirmance at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit of a $71 million arbitration award to a plaintiff for the defendant’s breach of a farm-out agreement for an international oil and gas lease and assisting with obtaining a $44 million arbitration award for his client based on claims of securities fraud and minority shareholder oppression.

In addition to his plaintiffs-side experience and nearly six-year tenure at the 14th Court of Appeals, Thomas worked 15 years combined at King & Spalding and Jackson Walker. The SMU Dedman School of Law graduate started his career at Brooks, Baker & Lange.
