ACC-DFW & Texas Lawbook Name Lifetime Achievers: Bridgett Zeterberg, Marita Covarrubias, Derek Lipscombe

December 5, 2024 Mark Curriden

Bridgett Zeterberg has been an in-house counsel for three decades, including the general counsel at Total Wine, Tuesday Morning and now Torrid Holdings.

For more than 25 years, Marita Covarrubias has been a lawyer and leader at Tenet Healthcare.

“Marita has never sought the limelight, even though her name was used as a recurring character on the X-Files,” says her husband, Derek Lipscombe. “However, she has managed some of the largest employment and general business litigation matters throughout the country.”

Speaking of Lipscombe, he has been an in-house lawyer focused on labor and employment litigation for 20 years at AAA Texas, JC Penney and, for the last nine years, at Toyota North America.

Besides being long-time, influential corporate legal counsel at some of the largest companies in North Texas, Zeterberg, Covarrubias and Lipscombe have a new common attribute.

The Association of Corporate Counsel’s DFW Chapter and The Texas Lawbook are pleased to announce that Zeterberg, Covarrubias and Lipscombe are the recipients of the 2024 DFW Corporate Counsel Award for Lifetime Achievement.

“Together, Marita and Derek exemplify what it means to dedicate a lifetime to excellence, integrity and the betterment of the legal profession,” said Alvin Benton, president of ACC-DFW. “Their shared journey has left an indelible mark on our community, and their partnership is truly inspiring. This award is a celebration of not just remarkable individual accomplishments, but also the power of collaboration and mutual support.”

Zeterberg has had “a remarkable career” guiding businesses “through periods of significant transformation,” according to Yvette Ostolaza, the global management committee chair and a Dallas partner at Sidley Austin. Ostolaza nominated the Torrid Holdings chief legal officer for the honor.

“In a world where legal challenges grow more complex every day, Bridgett has consistently demonstrated the ability to navigate them with grace, insight and extraordinary skill,” Benton said. “This award highlights a lifetime of excellent work by a truly exceptional leader.”

Zeterberg, Covarrubias and Lipscombe join several great DFW lawyers — Mark Shaw of Southwest Airlines, Leanne Oliver of PepsiCo, Chris Luna of T-Mobile, Mark Berg of Pioneer Natural Resources and Gary Kennedy of American Airlines — as recipients of the DFW Lifetime Achievement Award. In fact, Sidley senior counsel Gil Friedlander, the long-time GC at EDS, was the award’s first recipient.

The Lawbook and ACC-DFW will announce the finalists for the 2024 DFW Corporate Counsel Awards for General Counsel of the Year, Senior Counsel of the Year, Rookie of the Year, M&A Deal and Business Transaction of the Year and other honors during the next two weeks.

ACC-DFW and The Lawbook will celebrate the finalists and announce the winners of the 2024 DFW Corporate Counsel Awards on Jan. 30.
