Akin Partners Elect New Firmwide Co-Chairs

June 18, 2024 Mark Curriden

Akin Gump L.L.P., a 900-attorney corporate law firm founded in Dallas in 1945 by Robert Strauss and Richard Gump, announced Tuesday that it has elected a partner in New York and a partner in London to take over the firm’s leadership in 2025.

Abid Qureshi, a New York litigation partner who focuses on complex Chapter 11 bankruptcy disputes, and Daniel Walsh, a corporate transactions partner in Akin’s London office, will succeed Kim Koopersmith, who has served as chair since 2013.

In a press release issued Tuesday morning, Koopersmith said that Qureshi and Walsh will maintain their practices to stay close to the firm’s clients and markets.

“Having worked closely with Abid and Dan for more than two decades, I am so pleased to be transitioning leadership to two highly distinguished lawyers who share a deep commitment to our firm and our values,” Koopersmith said. “They work incredibly well together, and I can’t think of a better combination of talent to lead us forward. I am proud of what we have accomplished over the last 12 years, and it is gratifying to know the best is yet to come for our firm.”

Akin’s 167 Texas lawyers generated $257 million in revenue in 2023, according to The Texas Lawbook 50. Firmwide, the firm saw its 2023 revenues jump 11 percent to $1.37 billion.

According to the firm’s press release, Akin grew revenue by 77 percent and doubled its profitability under Koopersmith. More than 20 percent of its 900 lawyers are located outside the U.S.
