CDT Roundup: 11 Deals, 8 Firms, 71 Lawyers, $3.58B

In a generally weak week for dealmaking, it was easy to notice that Kirkland & Ellis partner Rahul Vashi has been on a tear of late with four deals in the past week or so. The CDT Roundup has Vashi’s view on how to keep multiple deal streams in order, and what he expects in the near future from a volatile deal market, as well as the usual list (however short) of the other lawyers who have been making things happen.

Of late, Houston partner Steve Gill has been carrying the V&E banner for what sometimes seems like a firm cast of thousands. This week’s CDT Roundup spotlights a couple of his recent transactions, along with the other Texas lawyers who reported more than $8 billion in deals last week.

CDT Roundup: 17 Deals, 12 Firms, 228 Lawyers, $11.9B

Dealmaking is hard enough in the simplest of times. Try putting one together when you’re in the process of changing firms. Angela Olivarez did exactly that, pulling off a complex technology deal while switching from Willkie to O’Melveny. Read what she tells the CDT Roundup about the experience, along with the usual list of last week’s Texas-made deals.

  • P.S. — New State Bar President Launches Campaign to Fund Legal Aid for Low-Income Texans  - When speaking to fellow lawyers, Santos Vargas often asks them a question to illustrate a point. “How many of you could hire yourselves for a protracted legal dispute?” The point is that many people don’t have the financial means to hire a lawyer when faced with a legal problem, which is why the newly minted State Bar of Texas president is on a campaign to raise money for low-income Texans to access legal services.
