Natalie joined The Texas Lawbook in 2012 as a founding staff member shortly after receiving her Bachelor of Arts in journalism from Southern Methodist University. While at SMU, Natalie and SMU-classmate-turned-Lawbook-colleague Brooks Igo published “Sweeping Rape Under the Rug,” an award-winning investigative piece about SMU’s handling of on-campus sexual assaults. Later that year, Natalie and Brooks published a follow-up piece that broke the news of the first grand jury indictment in decades of an SMU student involving an alleged on-campus sexual assault. She began her reporting career in college as an intern for The Dallas Morning News’ breaking news desk, and before that, interned for Texas Highways magazine.

In the early days of The Lawbook, Natalie served as a general assignment reporter and covered everything from lawsuits to Texas law schools to mergers and acquisitions to legal industry trends. Before launching The Lawbook’s pro bono, public service and diversity beat, Natalie served as senior litigation writer. She has covered numerous high-profile trials gavel-to-gavel, including the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s 2013 insider trading case against Dallas Mavericks owner and Shark Tank star Mark Cuban and a 2018 products liability trial that rendered a $242 million jury verdict against Toyota Motor Corp.

In 2021, Natalie profiled former East Texas federal prosecutor Joshua Russ, who went on the record for the first time with Posgate about resigning and filing a whistleblower complaint against the Department of Justice for its alleged political interference in a civil case Russ was leading against Walmart for its role in the opioid crisis. The piece is cited in a chapter of “Servants of the Damned,” a book released in September 2022 by New York Times journalist and bestselling author David Enrich.

Through The Lawbook’s content partnerships, Natalie’s work has regularly reappeared in the Houston Chronicle, Dallas Business Journal and The Dallas Morning News.

Natalie lives in East Dallas with her husband David and German Shorthaired Pointer rescue Stella. She is an avid runner, reader, hiker and coffee drinker.

For Haynes Boone, New Elementary School Pipeline Effort is a ‘Mood Lifter’

This month, Haynes Boone’s Dallas office launched a new community project that works with educational nonprofit United to Learn to support an underserved elementary school in the firm’s backyard. Beyond bolstering student achievement and helping to erase systemic inequities, the new partnership provides the opportunity to diversify the legal industry pipeline by reaching kids at an earlier age at a school that feeds into a high school Haynes Boone has a longstanding relationship with.

P.S. — Special Education Advocacy, Shop with a Cop, Hope for the Holidays

This week’s edition of P.S. features a new graduate program at St. Mary’s School of Law for special education advocacy, a holiday toy gift drive by Gray Reed, a Target shopping spree sponsored by Witherite Law Firm that benefits a local nonprofit bridging the gap between teens and law enforcement and an event honoring the major donors of the Dallas Volunteer Attorney Program’s Equal Access to Justice Campaign.

P.S. — Santa’s Wish List, Builders of Justice, Nos Populi Exhibit

This week’s edition of P.S. features the opening of an art exhibition at a Houston law firm that celebrates diversity, a movie screening hosted for neglected and abused children, a gift drive benefiting foster care children, a top scorer of LGBTQ+-focused Corporate Equality Index, and the honorees of Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas’ recent Builders of Justice Awards.

This week’s edition of P.S. features a Toyota lawyer’s recognition for her commitment to justice and to helping the underrepresented, a Texas Appleseed pilot program that works to help domestic violence victims break free from coerced debt brought by their abusers, December dates for Dallas Volunteer Attorney Program’s pro bono legal clinics, and a winter coat donation occurring this weekend for low-income students in the Fort Worth Independent School District sponsored by a major Dallas personal injury firm.

‘I Can Have a More Peaceful Life’: Sidley Helps Sexual Assault Survivor Secure VA Benefits

It was the actions of a series of men in the 1970s and 1980s that derailed the rest of Rachel Faili’s life, even almost ending it. It was the decision by a group of Sidley Austin lawyers to take action and represent this Houston veteran pro bono that helped her move forward from decades of the severe post traumatic stress disorder that has haunted her since her military service.

This is the story of both events, the bridge between them and how a lawyer’s skills can be used to truly make a difference in the lives of those who suffer.

This edition of P.S. features a new bank that joined a program that finances civil legal services in Texas through IOLTA accounts, a firm that recently became Mansfield 6.0 certified, recent awards received by Texas law students and law schools and law school staff and faculty for their dedication to pro bono, two lifetime achievement awards, a Texas firm’s recognition for its veteran pro bono work and an ABOTA civil and ethics-oriented award given to a special prosecutor in the Ken Paxton impeachment trial.

This edition of P.S. features an award received by an Aldous Walker attorney, an upcoming international rule of law-focused CLE hosted by Dallas nonprofit ACT and a Veterans Day gala tonight in Houston co-chaired by the top lawyers at CenterPoint and ConocoPhillips. Plus: a feature of Haynes Boone associate Alex Clark, an Air Force intelligence analyst turned lawyer who helped organize a special swearing-in at the state capitol this week for newly minted lawyer-veterans, discusses how his personal experiences motivate him to continue serving veterans.

Jeremy Wallace: From Air Force Language Analyst to Lawyer Giving Back to Vets 

Commercial litigator Jeremy Wallace loved his four years in the Air Force. He loved his work as a cryptologic language analyst, the friends he made, and the acquired skills that still show up in his law practice at Greenberg Traurig.

But, he acknowledges, “many people serve and they don’t leave unscathed,” so he’s put in significant hours this past year helping veterans pro bono. Wallace sat down with The Lawbook this week to discuss his military service, his path to becoming a lawyer and, as Veterans Day approaches, why he continues to serve veterans through pro bono work.

TAJF Hosts Veterans Legal Aid Week 

Throughout this week and next week, the Texas Access to Justice Foundation is celebrating Texas Veterans Legal Aid Week, which offers free civil legal aid to Texas veterans at various in-person and virtual clinics across the state. This article lists all upcoming clinics for veterans in need of pro bono legal advice as well as attorneys who want to inquire about volunteering.
