(Feb. 6) – Dykema Cox Smith recently boosted its health care practice in Dallas by adding Richard Cheng as a member.
Cheng, who was most recently at Munsch Hardt, is a former general counsel of two health care companies in Dallas. He says Dykema’s platform offered an opportunity to expand his practice.
“It’s a better fit for my practice to join a national health care group,” says Cheng, who is still a licensed occupational therapist. “Ninety percent of my practice is health care.”
Cheng’s practice focuses on representing providers in the post-acute care continuum, management service organizations, community hospitals, physician groups, pharmacies, wellness providers, clinical labs, therapy clinics and regulated products providers.
When he was general counsel at Senior Cares and Century Rehabilitation, Cheng assisted with change of ownership transactions, counseled on operational legal matters and worked closely with outside counsel managing multiple litigation matters. He also created the medical appeals departments at both health care organizations, which resulted in the successful recovery of millions of dollars in governmental and private health care insurance claims.
A growing area of Cheng’s practice is in representing cannabis producers. He currently serves as the outside general counsel of the Texas Cannabis Industry Association.
“Dykema is one of the few firms with a dedicated cannabis practice group,” he adds.
The firm also announced that Rick Daniel from K&L Gates has joined the firm as senior counsel. With the additions of Cheng and Daniel, Dykema has added 11 attorneys in Dallas over the past eight months.
