East Texas plaintiffs’ firm Sorey & Gilliland announced this week the opening of an office in Waco, the home to Baylor University, Joanna and Chip Gaines, the nation’s largest surf park and the hottest patent venue in the country.
Name partner Derek Gilliland, a Baylor Law grad, will lead the firm’s intellectual property practice and expansion to Waco. Earlier in his career, Gilliland achieved a successful outcome in a case where he was co-counsel with U.S. District Judge Alan Albright, who is credited with making the Western District the go-to venue it has become.
“It is no secret that the Western District has become a hotbed when it comes to patent litigation cases,” Gilliland said in a statement. “Given the increase in the number of cases we’re handling in the Western District, along with our firm’s already close ties to Waco, opening this new office now was simply a no-brainer.”
Prior to launching Sorey & Gilliland in January 2020 with Dan Sorey, Gilliland gained most of his experience with Nix Patterson, where he practiced for more than a decade and developed an expertise in handling patent, trademark and copyright infringement; unfair competition; and breach of contract claims.
