A federal judge in Sherman on Thursday awarded Plano-based property management software company ResMan $62.45 million and permanently enjoined ResMan’s courtroom opponents, Houston-based Karya Property Management and Expedien, from accessing and using ResMan’s confidential information.
The final judgment follows a jury trial this spring that found Karya and Expedien improperly accessed ResMan’s confidential software to develop a rival product. The five-woman, three-man jury awarded ResMan $152 million. U.S. District Judge Amos Mazzant’s $62.45 million award reflects what is allowed under the law.
The plaintiff is entitled to attorneys’ fees, and on Thursday ResMan’s lawyers asked the court to award $14.8 million in attorneys’ fees and other costs.
“ResMan is very pleased with the final judgment and permanent injunction,” Hogan Lovells partner Maria Wyckoff Boyce, ResMan’s lead attorney, said in a statement.
Lawyers for the defendants declined to comment on the final judgment and permanent injunction.
Beyond Boyce, the Hogan Lovells team representing ResMan at trial included Cristina Espinosa Rodriguez, Washington, D.C. appellate partner Jessica Ellsworth and Houston associates Jillian Beck, Ira Jamshidi, Lee Whitesell, Jennifer Bevilacqua and Sydney Rupe. Tyler-based lawyer Mike Jones of Potter Minton served as local counsel.
Karya and Expedian’s trial team was led by Corpus Christi lawyer Michael Richardson of Hilliard Martinez and included Seepan Parseghian and Russell Post of Beck Reddden; Mark Strachan and Dick Sayles of Bradley Arant Boult Cummings; Kelly Koudelka-Clark, Michael Ellis and Steven Mitby of Seiler Mitby; and Ali Dhanani of Baker Botts.
