(Sept. 3) – K&L Gates recently announced that former Assistant U.S. Attorney Brandon McCarthy has joined the firm’s Dallas office as a partner in its government enforcement practice.
McCarthy, who was in the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Dallas the past eight years, was most recently in the fraud and white-collar crime section. He will focus on regulatory, investigation and litigation matters at K&L Gates.
“When you get a chance to build and grow a white collar section in the ninth largest city in the U.S., at one of the best firms in the world, working for people like Dick Thornburgh, Mike Missal and John Garda, you really cannot turn down an opportunity like that,” he said. “That is why I left a job that I loved.”
The SMU Dedman School of Law graduate says his experience at the U.S. Attorney’s office exposed him to almost every type of fraud and crime there is and helped him develop “lifelong relationships” with special agents, federal judges and prosecutors.
“If you have never been on the other side, you really do not know how to completely and accurately assess a case from top to bottom,” said McCarthy, who has handled nearly 4,000 cases in his career as a prosecutor. “The ability to know where the weaknesses and strengths are is essential, especially when your ultimate decision on how to proceed with the case can be the difference between someone’s freedom and a long stretch in prison.”
In the past year, McCarthy has handled matters relating to a FCPA violation, investment fraud, securities fraud and attempted murder, mail fraud and wire fraud. He says healthcare fraud is the fastest-growing section in the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Dallas.
