Holland & Knight Recruits Tax Partner from Kirkland

June 21, 2024 Brooks Igo

Holland & Knight on Thursday announced it has hired Houston tax partner Ryan Phelps from Kirkland & Ellis.

Phelps focuses his practice on the tax aspects of complex domestic and cross-border transactions, including mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, leveraged buyouts, joint ventures, tax-free spin-offs, restructurings, public offerings, and other financings. He has significant experience advising on deals related to oil and gas and renewables.

“Ryan is a seasoned tax practitioner whose experience lends itself well to the types of work generated by our Houston and Dallas transactional practices,” Mark Melton, co-leader of Holland & Knight’s Tax, Executive Compensation and Benefits Practice Group, said in a press release. “As our work in the energy sector increases, Ryan can help satisfy client needs and reduce the demand on our more senior partners.”

Phelps joins a group that includes Emily Parker, a legend in the Texas tax bar.

A 2016 graduate of the University of Texas School of Law, Phelps started his career at Baker Botts. He moved to Kirkland in 2018.

Earlier this year, Phelps was on the deal team that advised Dallas investment firm Braemont Capital on its acquisition of Loenbro, a provider of services to the data center, infrastructure, and diversified industrial markets, from Tailwind Capital.

Last fall, Phelps helped guide Denver-based Civitas Resources in its $2.1 billion purchase of Midland Basin-producing assets from Vencer Energy.
