Veteran Houston white-collar criminal defense lawyer Dan Cogdell has joined the Big Law ranks after more than 30 years of running his own firm.
Cogdell, who represents Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton in his challenge of felony securities fraud charges from July 2015, has joined Squire Patton Boggs, the firm announced on Monday. He is one of two Texas partners, along with Cass Weiland in Dallas, in the firm’s government investigations and white-collar practice.
“Nationally, Dan’s reputation as a premier trial lawyer will advance our strategic objectives, particularly with our efforts to grow our Texas presence and enhance our credentials as a firm with proven jury trial lawyers,” Squire Patton Boggs Houston office managing partner Greg Wehrer said in a statement.
In a colorful career that spans almost four decades and nearly 300 jury trials, Cogdell has achieved legal victories in some of the state’s most high profile matters. He obtained acquittals for an accountant in the first Enron criminal trial and for one of the 11 members of the Branch Davidians who faced charges for the murders of four federal agents. He also represents controversial cancer doctor Dr. Stanislaw Burzynski.
Cogdell is a past honoree of the Harris County Criminal Lawyers Association’s White-Collar Criminal Defense Lawyer of the Year Award and the South Texas College of Law Alumni of the Year Award.
