Shimabuku to Run USPTO’s Dallas Office

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office named Xerox Business Services Corporate Counsel Hope Shimabuku to be the first regional director of the agency’s newly-created Dallas office. A former lawyer at BlackBerry, Shimabuku will take office Jan. 4. She will be charged with building an office that will eventually include more than 100 examiners, judges, and outreach and administrative staff.

Bill Brewer Firm Disqualification in Int’l Trial Reversed

A Dallas judge improperly disqualified the law firm formerly known as Bickel & Brewer from being involved in a multimillion-dollar international business dispute after the law firm hired a former executive from the company it is suing who had confidential information about the case, the Texas Supreme Court ruled Friday. The justices say the trial court used the wrong legal standard.

DMN: Bankruptcy Judge Approves EFH’s Plan

U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Christopher Sontchi ruled Thursday that Energy Future Holdings can move ahead on breaking up the company, setting the stage for Texas’ largest power company to emerge from bankruptcy court in the spring. The ruling effectively ends a fight among hedge funds and Wall Street tycoons that just six months ago appeared as if it might drag out for years.

Andy Payne, Deborah Hankinson and Crain Lewis Firm Lead Donations to Dallas Equal Access to Justice Campaign

Tens of thousands of low-income people in North Texas need legal assistance but cannot afford it. Family Law Legend Joe McKnight Dies

No single individual had a bigger impact on Texas divorce law than Joseph McKnight. He taught thousands of law students at SMU Dedman during his six decades as a legal educator. He also built an amazing collection of rare books – some dating back to 1481. The professor died Tuesday at age 90.
